There are 537 LGAs in Australia ranging in size from the smallest, the Shire of Peppermint Grove in Western Australia with app. 1,524 residents over 1.4 sqkm to the largest, East Pilbara Council with 11,005 residents over 379,571 sqkm and the most populous being the City of Brisbane with a population of 1.25 million residents. Local government services cover all areas and can include:

  • 01. Infrastructure and property services, including local roads, bridges, footpaths, drainage, waste collection and management
  • 02. Provision of recreation facilities, such as parks, sports fields and stadiums, golf courses, swimming pools, sport centres, halls, camping grounds and caravan parks.
  • 03. Health services such as water and food inspection, immunisation services, toilet facilities, noise control and meat inspection and animal control.
  • 04. Cultural facilities and services, such as libraries, art galleries and museums, and community events.
  • 05. Community services, such as childcare, aged care and accommodation, community care and welfare services
  • 06. Building services, including inspections, licensing, certification, and enforcement
  • 07. Planning and development approval
  • 08. Provision of and management of facilities, such as airports and aerodromes, ports and marinas, cemeteries, parking stations and on-street parking
  • 09. Water and sewerage services
  • 10. Other services, such as abattoirs, saleyards and group purchasing schemes.
